D&W Diesel was founded in January 1976 by Doug Wayne. Originally named D.W. Auto Electrical and located in a rented one-bay garage, Doug and one employee rebuilt starters, generators and alternators and offered drive-in electrical services.
By 1978, the business had outgrown its location, and moved to the former family farm on Routes 5 & 20, west of Auburn, NY, where it remains today. A year later Doug’s brother, Dave, became a partner in the business. Diesel fuel injection remanufacturing was added to the product offering, and the business was renamed D&W Diesel and Electric.
In 1980, D&W expanded its product lines to include the sales and service of turbochargers.
Four years later, D&W opened its first branch location in Rochester, NY, which was followed by the opening of a branch in Troy, NY two years later, facilitated by the purchase of Erlich Auto’s fuel and electric shop.
In the late 1980s, D&W purchased Ontario Electric and expanded its product offerings to include sales and service of DC motors. Positive displacement blowers for tank trucks were also added to the product offering, and the sales territory for tank truck equipment was subsequently expanded to cover all the New England and Mid-Atlantic states.
To support the growing sales territory, D&W opened a new location in Buffalo, NY in 1991, and moved the Troy location to Albany.
The Worcester, MA location was opened in 1997 in conjunction with the purchase of fuel shops from Mack Boring-New England and Rhode Island Mack.
In 1998, D&W added the sales and fabrication of hose and couplings to compliment the tank truck equipment product line, and a year later, established fully equipped hose shops in Auburn, Albany and Worcester.
1999 was a big year for the company. D&W signed as a distributor for Gardner Denver’s truck and industrial blowers and launched its Industrial Products Division to provide sales and service of bulk transfer equipment to the industrial market. In addition, the company was awarded the Garrett Central Distributorship for NY, NJ and New England, signed as a Blackmer distributor, and purchased the assets of Donnelly Diesel’s fuel injection shop.
In 2002, D&W purchased Dry Bulk Equipment of Cleveland, OH and established its Cleveland location. The turbocharger product line was strengthened with the purchased assets of United Turbo of Spofford, NH.
As an extension of our turbocharging market, in 2003, D&W invested in the business of installing and distributing performance engine products for both gas and diesel applications. Bully Dog Technologies and Garrett GT Performance lines were added as key product offerings for the performance market.
The following year, D&W was awarded the warehouse distributorships for Bosch, Hitachi and Mitsubishi electrics.
In order to accommodate the sales growth and additional test equipment, in 2005 a 17,500 sq. ft. addition was started at the Auburn facility. D&W also became a C.E. Niehoff distributor this year.
In 2007, D&W became an authorized distributor for Gardner Denver and Kobleco Compressed Air Products for Upstate New York.
D&W became a distributor for FRAM filtration and Vibrant performance products in 2008. In addition, the Albany branch moved to 51 Sicker Rd, Latham, NY and the corporate office expansion was completed in Auburn, NY.
2009 marked the year D&W launched their first e-commerce website: dwenginecomponents.com. This site allows our customers to browse, search and purchase our performance products from an on-line store. We were also awarded the Master Distributorship for Goodall, who is a manufacturer of vehicle jump starting equipment and power centers.
In 2010, D&W added two new product lines to the engine component offering: engine mounted air compressors and water pumps. These product lines were a natural extension of the D&W product offering and are supported by technical sales staff. D&W became a distributor for the performance vendor, MBRP, a manufacturer of performance exhausts, and for MP Pumps who manufacturers circulating pumps.
Our seventh branch location was established in 2011, in Cinnaminson, NJ. This branch serves the major metropolitan area of Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic States (now located in Sewell, NJ). In Auburn, NY, D&W started its third building expansion. The 55,000 sq. ft. expansion houses a distribution center and additional production space. In 2011 D&W also became a Parker Truck Hydraulic Center and launched its second e-commerce website: dwenginecomponents.com. This online storefront allows our customers to shop and purchase our engine component offering 24/7.
2012 was a year with proven growth for D&W. The company acquired its three newest locations, formally known as Fleetsource, located in Binghamton, NY, Sewell, NJ and Cliffwood, NJ. The branch in Cinnaminson, NJ moved to the Sewell, NJ location continuing to service the Philadelphia area. The Cliffwood, NJ location increases our committment and better serves our Northeast customers. These three new locations offer customer service, convenience and access to D&W’s inventory which currently exceeds $13 million. In addition to new locations, D&W also announced it’s latest product offering, EGR Coolers.
With over 290 employees, nine locations throughout the Northeast, and a solid financial standing, D&W is poised to continue its history of growth and success in the years to come.
