Charge Air Coolers
Many of today’s diesel engines rely on air to air heat exchangers to maximize fuel economy and performance. These units are commonly known as charge air coolers, intercoolers or aftercoolers. At D&W we service charge air coolers made by Modine, Garrett, Valeo and others with off-the-shelf replacement units.
Charge air coolers typically fail gradually and therefore declining efficiencies often go undetected. However, the consequences of a malfunctioning charge air cooler can be costly.
Common symptoms associated with charge air cooler failure:
- Loss of engine power
- Increased fuel consumption
- Exhaust manifold failure
- Premature piston, ring and valve failure
- Elevated coolant temperatures
- Turbocharger failure
- Increased particulate levels in emissions
Testing the charge air cooler should be part of your checklist when servicing vehicles with more than 3 years or 300,000 miles in service, and when troubleshooting low power complaints. Undetected leaks can steal your power and lower your fuel economy. Malfunctioning charge air coolers can reduce the life expectancy of an engine. In addition to replacement units, D&W offers a test kit for charge air coolers. It measures the air pressure loss due to leaks and is a vast improvement to the old dip-it-in-soapy-water test. Easy to use, it’s a great tool to have in your shop. Ask for part number 351-CAS.
We have an extensive inventory of charge air coolers on our shelf, ready to ship. 100% of our replacement charge air coolers contain brand new cooling cores and most are backed by a 7-year leak-free warranty. We also stock the connector hoses & clamps for most makes and applications.
